VIDEODERMOSCOPY OF HAIR AND SCALP
Hair loss is the most common hair problem and a prompt diagnosis of the type of alopecia may sometimes be extremely challenging. Methods commonly used to investigate may be invasive (biopsy), semi invasive (trichogram) or non-invasive (hair count, weighing shed hair and pull test).
Videodermoscopy of hair and scalp or `trichoscopy’ represents a valuable, noninvasive technique for the evaluation of patients with hair loss that allows for magnified visualization (from 60 up to ×1,000 magnification) of the hair and scalp skin. In particular, trichoscopy enhances the diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, trichotillomania, congenital triangular alopecia, scarring alopecia, tinea capitis and hair shaft disorders.
Trichoscopy (hair and scalp dermoscopy) allows identification of hair and scalp diseases based on analysis of trichoscopy structures and patterns. Structures which may be visualized by trichoscopy include hair shafts, hair follicle openings, the perifollicular epidermis and cutaneous microvasculature.
Videodermoscopes are non-contact dermoscopes and usually have three modes, the white light, ultraviolet (UV) light and the polarized light (PL). Trichoscopic observations can be broadly grouped as hair signs, vascular patterns, pigment patterns and interfollicular patterns.
Videodermoscopes in addition, provide for a better consultation as the doctor and patient can view the video graphic images simultaneously and also record the selected images for comparison during the subsequent follow-up.
Aram huvis videodermoscope that we use in our practice uses specialized software that allows evaluations of the hair loss stage, calculation of the hair density and number of hairs, measurements of the hair thickness and automatic analysis of the degree of har loss. The keratinization level od the scalp, the scalp sensitivity and pore condition can also be examined, which defines the status of the scalp skin. Furthermore, we can follow up the results from the growth stimulation treatments, the improvement of the hair thickness and hair quality as well as the reduction of the inflammation and sensitivity of the scalp.
